DUNIA is a Woman, a Mother, but it is also, in some sub-Saharan cultures, a concept that refers to Mother Earth; a Nature as Mother - It includes everything and is supported by every single movement (even if apparently small and insignificant) and by every single emotion, projecting its ultimate meaning onto a higher Universal level.
In this project the sound of the OUD adapts to a more electric context, without stylistic constraints.
The result is a meeting between different sounds: from jazz to fusion, to Middle Eastern music, to rock, to psychedelic music.
A sound that seeks constant dialogue between Particular and Universal, trying to bring together different styles, clear and incisive melodies immersed in a sound context that refers to a deeper second level, which only apparently lies in the background.
"...It is wonderful to hear these lovely Mediterranean-styled melodies woven so deeply into a jazz fabric, and done so convincingly. This is such a rich area to explore and the world is increasingly thirsty for interesting music of such integrity. What a marvellous group of musicians too..."
John Fenton (NZL) - Jazz journalist at JazzLocal32.com. Videographer and photographer and professional member of the Jazz Journalists Association
"L’abbinamento fra oud, chitarra e basso elettrici, e batteria determina fisiologiche inflessioni mediorientali, peraltro in un contesto misto, interessante e non banale appunto con la componente elettrica".
Alberto Bazzurro (ITA) - Jazz journalist at Musica Jazz (curating the Chanson(g)s section from 2012) and many other magazines, curated over 100 episodes on Rai (Italian Radio and television) RAI .
"Good dynamics and interesting composition. Great use of a limited palette of instruments - oud, guitar, bass, drums - melding east and west. I found myself listening intently to the nuances of the music and the spaces it created, and wanting to dance!"
Kathryn Shackleton (UK) - booking the artists for Watermill Jazz Club in Dorking, UK. She has been a panelist for the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the Sounds of Denmark festival in London
"Their music fills my heart with inspiration..."

THE PROJECT
The combination between sounds, melodies, rhythms of traditional Ottoman-Mediterranean music and atmospheres of European contemporary jazz, come together in this project, creating a unique and fashinating sound able to evoke, in the listener, a journey beyond the temporal dimension from the colors of Senegal to the wide silent spaces of the north, mixing sounds, elements and people of different cultures in one breath.
